Last winter I started swimming in the frozen sea with wetsuit. Suit helped me stay in water longer times, just quietly sit on the rocks, observe birds and other water animals without them really paying any attention to me.
I built my installation in Kasematti III, one of the underground bunkers of the island. Kasematti III houses ongoing photography exhibition about the underwater worlds, Meren sisäiset maisemat. Photographs are by Vesa Hietalahti, exhibition design by Aino Favén.

I am fascinated with the aesthetics of a laboratory as well as the idea of a laboratory: where two or more things meet and collide, leading to unknown results. In MERMAID RESEARCHER’S STUDY the unexpected happened this way: I had placed a broken typewriter on one side of installation, with which I had written some texts as part of the installation. Typewriter is broken, you have to adjust the ink toner by hand, it takes some effort to make it work. Yet, suddenly short texts started to appear in the machine: remarks about the weather or exhibition, “I was there” -notes, poetry. I soon started to expect these anonymous messages.
